YouTube's transcript panel vs Y/T_TRANSCRIPT

YouTube does show transcripts — but only on desktop, only one video at a time, and with no way to export. This page compares the native feature with Y/T_TRANSCRIPT so you can pick the right one for the job.

What YouTube's native transcript does well

If you just want to skim what was said and jump to a moment, the built-in panel is the fastest route: open the video on desktop, click the …more button under the title, then Show transcript. Clicking any line seeks the player to that timestamp — genuinely useful while watching.

Where it stops being enough

  • No export. There is no download button. You drag-select the panel and paste, which brings every timestamp along with the text.
  • Desktop only. The option is missing from most mobile layouts and from Shorts.
  • One at a time. Researching a ten-video playlist means ten manual passes.
  • No subtitle files. Editors need SRT or VTT; the panel gives neither.

Which one should you use?

  • Skimming one video while watching → YouTube's panel is fine.
  • Study notes, quotes, or citations → use the study notes workflow.
  • Subtitles for an edit → export SRT and drop it into your timeline.
  • Repurposing into content → follow the blog post guide.
  • Many videos → queue them on the pipeline page.

FAQ

Can you export a transcript directly from YouTube?

Not as a viewer. Only the video's owner gets a download, and only from inside YouTube Studio.

Why is "Show transcript" missing on some videos?

Shorts, most mobile layouts, and videos with captions disabled in the player hide the option — the caption track often still exists and can be read by a transcript tool.

Is Y/T_TRANSCRIPT free?

Yes — extraction, export, and translation are free with no signup and no browser extension.
